Many parents worry their child is not getting all the nutrients needed to support their growth and development and to keep them free from infection.
Having brought up two children, both girls now in their 20s, I know how challenging it can be to encourage them to eat healthily and make good food choices.
We can’t guarantee they will keep it going into adulthood, but we can try and instil a sense of eating well, and the health benefits it brings, helping them to understand the long term benefits that set children on the path to a lifetime of healthy eating.
As well as helping with ‘fussy eaters’, during over 10 years working as a nutritional therapist -including 6 years running the Children’s Specialist Clinic at the Institute of Optimum Nutrition (ION) – I have frequently seen and helped children suffering from a wide range of conditions: allergies; ADHD; asthma; anxiety; bed-wetting; digestive problems; ear, nose & throat issues; eczema; chronic fatigue; recurring infections; slow growth and excess weight.
I will support you throughout your child’s nutritional journey, starting with a symptom analysis and review of a health questionnaire and 5-day food diary. In some cases, it can be beneficial to use laboratory tests to pinpoint specific deficiencies or imbalances. The most often used are hair mineral analysis, urine and stool tests to identify metabolic and digestive imbalances, respectively, and finger prick blood samples to check for food intolerances.
To make testing as easy as possible, the test samples are collected by you at home, using a kit delivered to you direct from the lab, which contains clear instructions.
Once I have a full understanding of your child’s condition and the ideal outcome you would both like, I will compile a targeted eating and supplement plan. Whilst it’s important to ensure the plan provides a diet that addresses the issues, it’s also vital for it to be easy to follow and be sustainable in the long term. I’m very aware it’s not always plain sailing with children and food, particularly when you try to change things!
